How
it all started…
In
1998 Bill W., a respiratory therapist and colleague for
over 20 years, was experiencing serious medical problems and Ken suggested
running
a nocturnal
oximetry.
This was done and the screening results indicated very abnormal sleep
disorder breathing (SDB) and apnea. The results were shown to his
doctor and four days later Bill underwent emergency open heart surgery
(4-way
bypass). Bill’s doctor diagnosed his problem as Sleep Apnea and Sleep
Disorder Breathing. He had severe hypoxia because his oxygen levels
dropped abnormally low at night while sleeping. The diagnosed severe
apnea created
the heart problem. If the hypoxia had not been found through the
in-home nocturnal oximetry and the heart surgery had not been performed,
Bill’s
life would have been in grave danger.

This incident was primary
in motivating Ken to direct his attention to studying sleep disorder
problems. The more he researched the more he realized the significance
of conducting nocturnal oximetry screening. He also recognized the importance
and convenience of conducting this screening process in an “in-home”
setting, where it offered the patient to sleep in a more “relaxed” state

The idea of in-home nocturnal oximetry screening was presented to two southern
California physician owned specialty clinics. Each realized the importance
of the screening to aid in the prevention of stroke, heart attacks, congestive
heart failure, hypertension, and type two diabetes. Eighty per cent of their
patients are screened.
