Frequently Ask Questions

Q… How accurate are American Sleep Systems equipment and the results?
A… Our units are the same as used in most modern hospitals around the world to monitor patients in many critical care environments, including anesthesia during surgery and intensive care units during mechanical ventilation. Oximeters are very accurate when used properly by following the simple, easy to understand instructions included with our unit. They are calibrated during manufacture and automatically check their own internal circuits when turned on for patient use. All results are reviewed by a respiratory professional before they are returned to you.
Q… How many nights screening are required to get valid results?
A… If you have a moderate to severe case of sleep apnea and you experience related symptoms on a regular basis, a one night screening with at least 3 hours of sleep will typically give you valid results. Many patients prefer to take the screening for additional nights because their symptoms are not present every night or they are taking medications and would like to understand the effect of the medication on their sleep.

Q… Does health insurance cover the cost of the screening?
A As insurance coverage varies widely we cannot determine what your individual plan covers. Upon request, we will provide you the necessary documents for reimbursement from your insurance company or your company's flexible medical benefits plan (also referred to as IRS section 125 Cafeteria Plans).

Q… How long does it take to process an order and when can I expect to get a unit to my home?
A… If you have a moderate to severe case of sleep apnea and you experience related symptoms on a regular basis, a one night screening with at least 3 hours of sleep will typically give you valid results. Many patients prefer to take the screening for additional nights because their symptoms are not present every night or they are taking medications and would like to understand the effect of the medication on their sleep.

Q How fast will I get the results of the screening?
A… We process results within 24 hours from the time that we receive your returned screening. After the results are processed and reviewed, we send them to you or your doctor via first class US mail unless another shipping method is requested.

Q Will I be able to follow the instructions?
A...
Yes, after a lengthy period of trial and error we developed a set of step-by-step written and pictorial instructions easy to understand and follow.

Q Do I need to do anything to prepare for the Screening?
A… No. The purpose of this screening is to find out how you sleep in your typical environment. The only preparation needed would be to remove nail polish or other obstructions from your finger(s) you have chosen to take the screening. This will ensure the equipment can produce accurate results.

Q… Can more than one person take the screening on the same unit sent to my home?
A… Yes. You and one other family member can take the sleep apnea screening using the same unit. A total of 4 nights screeninging can be stored in our unit. When you place your order just indicate who will be taking the screening other than yourself and how many requested nights.

Q… What if the results show I don't desaturate at night?
A… If you still snore or experience other SDB symptoms you should take these results to your physician to discuss what your next steps should be.

Q… What should I do if I am currently using a CPAP device and the screening indicates my oxygen levels are below normal?
A… You should take the results to you doctor to discuss the change in your oxygen saturation levels. In many cases, as we get older our bodies change and require adjustments in CPAP mask pressures to conform to these changes. It is recommended by respiratory care professionals that this follow-up monitoring be performed at least annually to ensure proper operation of your equipment and sustained improvement in sleep quality.

Q… What should I do if my doctor and I do not understand the contents of the results?
A… Contact us. As part of the cost, we provide telephone consultation to you or your doctor.
